DESK DIARY: Meeting Danny Choo

DESK DIARY: Meeting Danny Choo

There are a handful of people you encounter in life without ever actually meeting them. People whose work shapes how you see the world entirely. Danny Choo was one of those people for me.

I first discovered Danny's blog when I was a teenager. Back then, he was documenting his journey as an entrepreneur in Japan. Long before Smart Doll became what it is today, he was sharing the reality of building something from nothing. I remember reading posts about working from a tiny corner with little more than a table and a laptop.

Whenever I felt lost, stuck, or didn't know how to press forward, I'd go back and read his Desk Diary entries (which he was kind enough to leave archived for casual reading btw). It really resonated with me to see his progress documented honestly over all those years. Not just the wins, but the process.. The evolution. (Writing this is getting me fired even now lol.)

In a lot of ways, that's why I started writing my own Desk Diary here.

It's why I take a picture of every workspace I have in the different phases of my life. (maybe one of these days I'll share them.)

It's kind of also my attempt to do for myself what Danny's blog did for me all those years ago: create a record of the journey, one day at a time.

So when I say meeting Danny Choo was emotional for me, I really mean it.

The funny thing is that it happened through what can only be described as a cosmic-level stroke of luck.

A few days before I arrived in Japan, I was chatting with a friend of mine. At some point in the conversation, I casually mentioned:

"One of my life goals is to meet Danny Choo. He's a doll creator who lives in Japan."

He looked at me and said:

"Wait... do you mean Smart Doll? I literally ran past their offices the other day and talked to him. Maybe I can set up a meeting."

I nearly dropped dead on the spot.

There's no other way to describe it.

Of all the cities. Of all the people. Of all the random conversations that could have happened, somehow Scott had casually met the exact person I'd been following for years.

Next thing I know, me n' Danny are taking a picture together. Yes. I cried. No. I don't wanna talk about it lol.

What struck me most wasn't meeting the founder of Smart Doll. It was meeting the person whose work taught me that progress doesn't have to be dramatic to be meaningful.

Sometimes success starts with a table in the corner of a room.

Sometimes it starts with writing a Desk Diary entry when you think nobody is reading.

And sometimes, years later, you get the chance to thank the person who inspired you to keep going.

For that, I'll always be grateful.

Thank you, Danny.

AND THANK YOU JESSE & SCOTT. SERIOUSLY.
